Some features in the App Store version need additional setup.
Add the plugins you need to connect to the Workshop, show song information, or set up screen savers and lock screens.

Workshop

Bring discovery, sign-in, and downloads together. Once enabled, the plugin adds Discover, Workshop, and Subscribed pages to Motiscape.

  • Browse popular wallpapers, new releases, and tags, and view your subscribed wallpapers.
  • Sign in to Steam, complete verification, and track progress in the download center.
  • Download wallpapers and presets. The required runtime is included; no separate .NET SDK is needed.

After enabling: Follow the prompts to sign in to Steam. You may need to sign in again the first time you use this plugin. Downloads require access to the relevant content. You can configure a Steam Web API key in the browsing settings.

Song information

Show what you are listening to in scene wallpapers that support song information.

  • Share the song title, artist, album, and playback status available from the system.
  • Provide playback progress, duration, and available album artwork.
  • Extract colors from album artwork for wallpapers that support them.

After enabling: Play music, then apply a scene wallpaper that supports song information. What appears depends on the player’s data, the wallpaper design, and system compatibility. Installing the plugin does not add song information to every wallpaper.

Beyond the desktop

Use supported video and scene wallpapers as animated screen savers, and try experimental animated lock screens.

  • Install and configure the screen saver component, preserving wallpaper presets, custom properties, and scaling options.
  • Screen savers stay silent. Later customizations to the same wallpaper can sync to the screen saver.
  • Animated lock screen option A requires macOS 26 or later; option B requires macOS 14.2 or later.

After enabling: In Settings → Screen Saver & Lock Screen, click “Install” under “Screen Saver Component,” then set the currently playing wallpaper as your screen saver. Open the system screen saver settings and select motiscape. For animated lock screens, follow the instructions for your chosen option. Grant system permissions only when the app requests them.

Animated lock screens are experimental and may stop working after macOS updates. Web wallpapers are not supported by these screen saver and lock screen features. When you quit the main app, the plugin stops these features and restores the previous configuration.

Installation guide

Add plugins to the App Store version.

Install the relevant plugins to enable Steam Workshop, song information, screen savers, and animated lock screens in the App Store version.

  1. Download a plugin

    Download the plugin for the feature you need.

  2. Place it and open it once

    Place the downloaded plugin .app in a permanent location such as Applications, then open it once in Finder to complete the initial confirmation.

  3. Add it to Motiscape

    In Motiscape, open Settings → Plugins, click “+” beside “Third-Party,” select the plugin .app, and wait for the configuration confirmation.

  4. Restart and check its status

    Restart Motiscape and check that the plugin is marked “Enabled.”

The App Store version links to the original plugin app you select. Keep it in the same location after adding it. Moving, renaming, or deleting it may require you to add it again.

Installation questions

New features not appearing?

Restart Motiscape after adding a plugin. Check that it is marked “Enabled” and that its version matches the main app. Steam pages and screen saver settings appear when their plugins are enabled. Song information requires a scene wallpaper that supports it.

How do I update or remove a plugin?

Remove the plugin in Settings → Plugins, then wait for it to stop and restore any settings. To update, add the new version and restart Motiscape. In the App Store version, removal unlinks the plugin but leaves the original app in place. You may need to configure screen savers or lock screens again. Only one plugin of each type can be added.

Plugin disconnected or unable to open?

Check that the plugin app is still where it was when you added it, then restart Motiscape. If the issue persists, confirm you are using a Mac with Apple silicon and compatible app, plugin, and system versions. If macOS reports damage or a security risk, stop using that file, download a fresh official release, and report the exact message.

Will local wallpapers work without the Steam plugin?

Local playback and existing wallpaper files do not depend on the Steam plugin. Steam downloads cannot continue or retry after removal. Add the plugin again and restart to manually resume unfinished downloads.
